Water is becoming part of the engineering brief for India’s next wave of technology infrastructure. At SEMICON India 2026, Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted extensive water recycling in semiconductor fabs and closed-loop cooling in data centres. The point came amid 25 announcements and collaborations across the semiconductor supply chain.

The government release describes a direction, not a measured result. It does not name a data-centre project, identify a cooling design, state make-up water demand or quantify recycling at a fab. Closed-loop systems can reduce withdrawals, but the actual balance depends on climate, heat load, water quality and the treatment system a facility operates. Those details matter more than the phrase alone.

The reporting trail is a facility-level water balance: source and permitted abstraction, expected make-up water, blowdown and treatment, recycled volumes, and energy use per unit of cooling. Without those figures, it is too early to say whether the announced approach has changed construction specifications or operating performance.
